Case filed over exhumation of Pir Shamim's remains from grave

A case has been filed at Doulatpur Police Station in Kushtia over the exhumation of the remains of the late Pir Abdur Rahman, also known as Shamim Jahangir, from his grave and their reburial at the shrine he had established.

The case was filed by the deceased's brother, retired school teacher Fazlur Rahman, on Saturday night, naming unidentified individuals as accused. Additional police have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward situation.

Police have said that, according to the family's decision, the grave will be cemented to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future.

Allegations surfaced that on the night of Friday, September 4, the remains of Pir Shamim Jahangir were exhumed from the grave in the south-western cemetery of Philipnagar area and reburied on the premises of his shrine. The family came to know of the matter on Saturday morning. Police and administration officials visited the spot and found the grave dug open. Following administrative directives, the remains were recovered from the new grave at the shrine and reburied at the original grave site in the Philipnagar cemetery around 4pm on Saturday.

The incident has sparked fresh tension in the area. While the remains were restored to the original grave with administrative intervention, those involved in the incident are yet to be identified.

Doulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khaledur Rahman said police found evidence of the remains being removed from the grave. Later, on the instructions of the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and with local cooperation, the remains were recovered from the shrine premises and reburied at the cemetery.

He further said police and intelligence agencies are investigating to identify those involved in the exhumation. A case has been filed by the deceased's brother, and no arrests have been made so far.
