Case filed over Oprotim killing in Cumilla

A murder case has been filed over the killing of 13-year-old Ishiyat Shahriar Oprotim, the only son of Cumilla University Bangla Department Associate Professor Dr Nahida Begum.

Oprotim’s father, Firoz Shahriar, filed the case against unidentified suspects with Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station late Saturday night.

Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police Pankaj Barua confirmed the matter on Sunday (September 20).

Police said they have identified those allegedly involved in the killing and detained several people. Pankaj Barua said the district police would hold a press briefing after 2pm on Sunday to disclose details of the investigation.

Oprotim went missing from the Kotbari area on Friday afternoon after leaving home with his mother’s iPhone to take pictures with friends. His father later filed a general diary with the police station.

The boy’s body was recovered on Saturday afternoon from a bush in Sananda village, near the Lalmai hills and the southern gate of Cumilla University. Oprotim was a seventh-grade student at Border Guard Public School in Kotbari.

Police initially detained a 19-year-old identified as Tuhin and later arrested another suspect, Anas. Investigators are examining whether the iPhone was linked to the killing and are questioning the detainees.

After completion of the necessary procedures, Opritom was buried at a cemetery near his home around 11:40am on Sunday.
