Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin announced on Tuesday that foreign observers who previously endorsed the last three elections as ‘valid’ will not be permitted to observe the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The statement came following a meeting with Canada’s High Commissioner Ajit Singh at the Election Commission office in Agargaon on July 8.

During the meeting, the Canadian envoy inquired about the Election Commission’s preparations for the upcoming polls. The CEC shared detailed information regarding voter awareness initiatives, training programs, and other preparatory measures aimed at ensuring a free, fair, and credible election.

Addressing concerns related to the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in elections, Nasir Uddin said the commission had discussed these issues and welcomed suggestions from international partners. He also noted Canada’s satisfaction with the Election Commission’s commitment to conducting transparent polls and expressed hopes for continued collaboration, including support for ballot projects.

Nasir Uddin further confirmed that many foreign observers, including those from the European Union, have confirmed their participation in the next election. However, he made it clear that observers who previously certified the last three elections as legitimate would not be allowed to monitor the forthcoming polls.
