Centenarian's burial wish triggers controversy, Islamic scholars intervene
In Katiadi, Kishoreganj, family members of a deceased centenarian prepared to bury him with drum-beating to fulfil his 'last wish', but after intervention by local individuals and Islamic scholars, the janaza and burial were conducted according to Islamic rites. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in the Purba Kahetertek Mahalla area of Ward 6 under Katiadi municipality.
According to locals, the man, Shamsuddin Mia, died of old age. After his death, family members began preparations to bid him farewell with drum-beating. Many recorded videos on their mobile phones, which later spread on social media, sparking widespread discussion.
The family claimed that Shamsuddin Mia had expressed his wish to be buried with drum-beating after his death. It was also learned that the deceased and his family were followers of the late Pir Ghazi Akbar Alayee Rizvi of Netrokona.
Upon hearing the news, local individuals and Islamic scholars went to the spot and discussed the matter with family members, explaining the Islamic rulings on janaza and burial from the Quran and Hadith. The family members then stopped the drum-beating and other arrangements. A janaza was held with the participation of local worshippers, followed by burial in the family graveyard.
Local alim Maolana Tofazzal Haque Rasheedi said the family members understood the matter when it was explained to them, and the janaza and burial were completed peacefully.
The deceased's sons, Khairul Islam and Nazimuddin, said they had tried to fulfil their father's last wish, but after considering the advice of Islamic scholars and local opinions, they ultimately conducted the burial according to traditional rules.
Katiadi Model Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam said no written complaint was received regarding the matter, and the situation in the area is now normal.
