Certain groups opposing establishment of democracy: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that certain groups are obstructing the establishment of democracy in Bangladesh.
The event was presided over by Nationalist Lawyers Forum President Zainul Abedin and conducted by Secretary General Barrister Kaiser Kamal.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Nationalist Lawyers Forum at the Supreme Court Bar Auditorium on Thursday (July 31), Fakhrul said, “Some people in this country do not want democracy to be established. Let us all unite to protect democracy. Let us honour the martyrs of the July movement through a truly democratic election.”
Fakhrul criticized the government for moving away from the spirit of the July movement and accused it of prioritizing power over reform. He said, “We were the first to bring reforms. The current government only talks about reforms while consolidating power.”
He urged the government to conduct elections without delay, warning that further postponement would erode public trust and damage the image of prominent national figures like Dr Muhammad Yunus. “The people want elections. Delaying them any further will not be beneficial for anyone,” he added.
Addressing the legal community, Fakhrul emphasized their role in leading future political movements and called for their active participation in the democratic process. “It is time for experienced and principled lawyers to take the lead in national politics,” he said.
Other speakers included Supreme Court Bar President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, senior lawyer Subrata Chowdhury, and several leaders of the forum.
