Chaitra Sankranti is observed as a time to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new, is celebrated by Bengalis with a variety of festivals, traditions, and religious rituals.

Tomorrow, Monday, 1st Baishakh, marks the beginning of the Bengali New Year 1432. The preceding day, Chaitra Sankranti, is celebrated as a festive time of preparation for the New Year.

On this day, followers of traditional religions observe rituals such as holy bathing, almsgiving, and fasting in accordance with their scriptures. People of other faiths also celebrate the occasion with events rooted in their own beliefs. Across the country, fairs are organised featuring lathi khela (stick fighting), traditional dances like raibes, colorful processions, and musical gatherings. Business establishments are also adorned with a fresh look to welcome the New Year.

The most notable event of Chaitra Sankranti is 'Charak Puja'. It is an integral part of the Gajan festival. On this occasion, a procession starts from the village Shivtala and ends at another Shivtala. Some people dress up as Shiva, some as Gauri, some as ghosts and demons. Devotees participate in a joyful, colorful dance accompanied by Shiva and Gauri.

The custom of eating special foods such as chira, curd, muri, khai, coconut-sesame paste and fourteen types of vegetables on this day has also become a part of the food culture of Bengalees.

This day signifies more than just a change in the calendar—it's a promise to leave behind past hardships, sorrows, and darkness, and to step forward into a new light and hope.

As the joyful celebrations of Chaitra Sankranti come to a close, the Bengali nation will welcome the dawn of the New Year with Pohela Baishakh—a vibrant festival of joy, unity, and the promise of a fresh beginning.
