Chhatra Dal leader killed in Narayanganj factional clash

Pavel Mia, 30, a former convener of the Kanchan municipality Chhatra Dal in Narayanganj’s Rupganj, was killed in an attack allegedly carried out by members of his own party.

The incident occurred in front of the Kanchan municipal office on Tuesday night.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam said the attack was triggered by an earlier argument between Pavel and Aminul Islam Swapan, the member secretary of the Kanchan municipal Swechhasebak Dal, and Bayezid, general secretary of the municipality’s Ward No. 6 BNP.

Around 10pm, Bayezid, Jahangir, and their associates allegedly came looking for Swapan near the municipal office. Upon finding Pavel standing alone in front of the building, they attacked him with sticks, hitting him on the head and other parts of his body, the police officer said.

Locals rushed Pavel, who was in a semi-conscious state, to a nearby private hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Following the incident, enraged locals set fire to Bayezid’s house at night. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control.

Police have sent Pavel’s body to Narayanganj General Hospital for an autopsy and are actively working to arrest those involved.

“The situation in the area is tense but under control,” said the ASP. “Legal actions are being initiated in connection with the incident.”
