Chhatra Dal-Shibir clash at BRU over exhibition showing war-criminals as 'judicial killing victims'

A clash broke out between activists of Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur over the display of photos of convicted war criminals from Jamaat-e-Islami at an exhibition organised by Shibir to mark the July uprising. At least three people from both sides were injured in the incident.

The incident took place around 7:30pm on Monday, August 3, at the university's Independence Memorial Ground.

Eyewitnesses said a banner at the exhibition organised by Shibir depicted convicted war criminal leaders of Jamaat, including Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, as "victims of judicial killings". Chhatra Dal activists objected and demanded the banner be removed. During the argument, tension escalated.

Allegations have been made that both sides later engaged in chasing each other. Chairs, tree branches and bricks were used in the clash, leaving at least three injured.

After the incident, activists of both organisations took separate positions and shouted counter-slogans, creating tension across the campus.

University Proctor Dr Ferdous Rahman rushed to the scene and tried to bring the situation under control.

He said those involved would be identified by reviewing video footage of the incident. A probe committee would be formed and action would be taken against the culprits in accordance with university rules.
