Chhatra Dal-Shibir clash in Chattogram over 'Gupto' graffiti
Clashes broke out between Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir at Government City College in Chattogram in multiple rounds. The two groups faced off on Tuesday morning, and again in the afternoon, resulting in stone pelting and attacks with sticks.
The college authorities suspended internal classes and examinations to manage the situation. However, degree second year and master's examinations under the National University were held as scheduled.
According to sources, the dispute originated over a graffiti. A wall at the college had a graffiti reading 'Chhatrarajniti O Chhatra League Mukto Campus' (Student politics and Chhatra League free campus). On Monday night, a group of activists led by JCD joint convener Abdullah Al Mamun removed the word 'Chhatra' and wrote 'Gupto' (secret/hidden) in its place, making the phrase read 'Guptorajniti O Chhatra League Mukto Campus' (Secret/hidden politics and Chhatra League free campus).
Tension spread across the campus following this incident, leading to the first round of clashes in the morning.
College Proctor Jasim Uddin said police arrived after the morning clash and brought the situation under control, following which internal classes and examinations were suspended after 12:00 pm.
However, the two groups clashed again around 4:00 pm, with both sides seen carrying sticks and pelting stones at each other in front of the college. Witnesses said police were present but appeared largely inactive. No immediate information on casualties was available.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Aftab Uddin said additional police have been deployed at the scene. Details will be provided later.
