Chhatra Dal-Shibir clash in Narayanganj leaves 5 injured

Multiple clashes broke out between activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir in Narayanganj following a programme marking the July Mass Uprising Day. The clashes, which included chasing and counter-chasing, continued for about an hour and a half, leaving at least five injured. Police later brought the situation under control by dispersing both groups.

The incident took place on Wednesday (August 5) afternoon in the Chashara and Government Tolaram College areas of Narayanganj city.

Narayanganj Additional Police Superintendent (DB) Md Hasinuzzaman said tensions arose between the two groups during speeches at a programme organised at Government Tolaram College to mark the July Mass Uprising Day around 12pm. The situation later escalated into chasing and clashes, leaving four to five injured. However, he said their injuries were not serious.

Police and eyewitnesses said leaders of various student organisations spoke at the programme held at the college auditorium. Tensions escalated over counter-speeches between JCD and Shibir leaders. Later, activists from both groups clashed in the College Road and Chashara areas. Several individuals were seen carrying sticks, iron pipes and bamboo during the clashes.

Upon receiving the news, Fultala Police Station and district Detective Police members arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. Both groups were later removed from their positions.

Shibir's Narayanganj city unit president Amit Hasan alleged that JCD attacked their activists inside Tolaram College, and he himself sustained a head injury. He said Tolaram College unit Shibir president Emdadul Haque Shuvra, general secretary Tamim Iqbal and finance secretary Juhaj were injured and undergoing treatment at Narayanganj 300-bed Hospital.

On the other hand, Tolaram College unit JCD president Monir Hossain Zia claimed that Shibir leaders gave provocative speeches at the programme. Following a dispute, JCD activists Tuhin Ahmed and Robin were attacked. They are currently receiving treatment at Narayanganj General Hospital.

DB chief Md Hasinuzzaman said no one has been detained or arrested so far. Legal action will be taken against those involved in the clashes after analysing CCTV footage and completing the investigation.

After police removed Shibir activists from the area, they left the scene. However, JCD and Jubo Dal activists were seen marching and taking position with sticks in the College Road, Jamtala, Chashara and Kalir Bazar areas. Additional police were deployed in the area to maintain normalcy.
