Fresh tensions erupted outside National Medical College Hospital in the capital on Tuesday evening, following earlier clashes between activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir at Jagannath University.

Supporters of both organisations gathered outside the hospital, raising fears of further violence.

Witnesses said leaders and activists of the Dhaka South units of the BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal were also present at the scene.

Police deployed additional personnel to prevent the situation from escalating.

Earlier in the day, repeated clashes broke out between Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir activists during an event marking the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising at Jagannath University. At least 50 people were reported injured.

The unrest later spread to other parts of the capital, including the area in front of Dhaka Alia Madrasa in Bakshibazar.

Clashes also took place at Dhaka College, where activists from the two organisations exchanged brickbats and engaged in repeated chases and counter-chases during the afternoon, leaving several people injured.

The latest gathering by rival groups outside National Medical College Hospital has further heightened tensions, with law enforcement agencies remaining on high alert to prevent any further deterioration of the situation.
