Chhatra League leader dies soon after he picked up by Faridpur DB police
A Chhatra League leader has died in hospital within hours of being detained by the Detective Branch (DB) in Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur. The incident has created a sensation in the area.
According to police and family sources, the District unit Detective Branch arrested Md. Ishtiaq Ahmed Pranto from Gondardia area of Madhukhali Municipality late on Sunday night. He was later taken to the Faridpur District Detective Branch office. Police claim that about 100 grams of marijuana was recovered from him at that time.
Later, police said that he fell ill while in custody. He was first taken to Faridpur General Hospital. Later, when his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. He died there while undergoing treatment.
The deceased Pranto is the son of the deceased Eskender Haider of Gondardia area of Madhukhali Municipality.
The family alleged that he was picked up from his house at night and the family members were informed of his death shortly after. The deceased's uncle and former councilor Mirza Abu Zafar said: "DB police took him from his house at night. Later in the morning, we learned that he died in the hospital."
Meanwhile, the police said that it is initially believed that his death may have been due to a brain stroke or brain hemorrhage. However, the body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Faridpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mahmudul Hasan said that a person detained with drugs fell ill and was taken to the hospital. He died there. The real cause will be known after the investigation.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police Md. Nazrul Islam said that initially no evidence of any physical torture was found. However, the matter is being investigated seriously.
Tension prevails in the area surrounding the incident and law enforcement agencies are monitoring the situation.
