Chief Adviser and political leaders sign July National Charter 2025
Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and top leaders of various political parties signed the historic July National Charter 2025 this evening. The signing took place after 5pm at the South Plaza of the National Parliament on Friday, October 17.
Earlier, Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus arrived at the venue at 4:30pm. The ceremony began at 4:37pm with the national anthem. Members of the Advisory Council, senior political leaders, and members of the National Consensus Commission were present at the event.
Since the interim government took office, it has undertaken reform initiatives across various sectors. Following this, the National Consensus Commission reviewed the proposals of six reform commissions. Between February and July, after several rounds of discussions, the commission reached consensus on a total of 84 reform proposals. Based on these proposals, a draft of the July Charter was prepared and later finalised after consultation with experts and political parties.
Incorporating the opinions of all parties, the National Consensus Commission prepared the final written draft of the charter and distributed copies to political parties last Tuesday. Today, October 17, the process was formally completed through the signing ceremony.
Meanwhile, tension arose around the Parliament area from the morning. Members of the “July Fighters” gathered near the Parliament, demanding state recognition for those injured in the July uprising and honouring them as “July Heroes.”
Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-President of the National Consensus Commission, addressed the protesters, assuring them that their recognition would be included in the July Charter and urged them to leave peacefully. However, when the demonstrators continued their sit-in, law enforcement removed them, leading to brief clashes.
Later, Professor Riaz announced that clause number five of the charter’s declaration had been amended to include formal recognition of the July Fighters’ contributions and sacrifices.
