Chief adviser meets Italian PM on safe migration issue
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus held a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday at a hotel in New York.
Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Shafiqul Alam, said the main focus of the discussion was safe migration. He quoted, ‘Many Bangladeshis are losing their lives while attempting to reach Italy by sea. Human traffickers are luring Bangladeshis, which often results in tragic accidents.’
The Rohingya crisis was also discussed. Prime Minister Meloni said Italy would send a high-level delegation to the upcoming Rohingya conference scheduled to be held at the UN headquarters on September 30.
In addition, Professor Yunus proposed further expansion of trade relations between Bangladesh and Italy. In response, Meloni suggested forming an Italy-Bangladesh Business Forum and reaffirmed support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition.
Shafiqul Alam further stated that the Italian Prime Minister expressed interest in visiting Bangladesh this December.
The Chief Adviser arrived in New York on Monday to attend the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. He is scheduled to return home on October 2.
