Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Air Vice Marshal (retd) Abdul Karim Khandker (A.K. Khandker), a Bir Uttom gallantry award recipient, veteran freedom fighter, deputy chief of staff of the Mukti Bahini, first chief of the Bangladesh Air Force, and former minister.

In a condolence message, Dr. Yunus described A K Khandker as an unforgettable figure in Bangladesh’s War of Liberation. He said Khandker played a crucial role in achieving independence in 1971 through his courage, strategic vision, and leadership. His contributions as deputy chief of staff of the Mukti Bahini, particularly in planning and organisation, helped strengthen the liberation struggle.

The Chief Adviser noted that after independence, A k Khandker played a pioneering role in building the Bangladesh Air Force and laid its foundation as the country’s first air force chief, turning it into a disciplined and effective institution.

Dr. Yunus also recalled that Khandker faced various challenges during the previous authoritarian regime for documenting the true history of the Liberation War through his writings, saying his commitment to historical truth came at a personal cost.

Describing him as a principled, honest, and courageous patriot, the Adviser said A k Khandker’s ideals and legacy would continue to inspire future generations. He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, relatives, comrades, and admirers.
