Child among two killed as wedding microbus falls into ditch in Nilphamari

A wedding celebration turned tragic in Nilphamari's Kishoreganj as a microbus carrying a newlywed couple and wedding guests plunged into a roadside ditch, leaving a seven-month-old infant and a young man dead and at least 12 others injured.

The accident took place around 3:00am on the Kishoreganj–Tengnamari Road in the Shaltibari area early Saturday (July 18) when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while returning from a wedding ceremony.

The deceased were identified as Jibon Islam (7 months) and Riyad Islam, 20, an HSC examinee. The bride and groom were among the injured.

According to the police, the wedding party was returning to the groom's home after the marriage ceremony when the crash occurred. Locals rescued the victims and rushed them to Kishoreganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared Jibon and Riyad dead.

The remaining 12 injured passengers were given primary treatment before being referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced care.

Abdul Gafur, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kishoreganj Police Station, said, "The bodies had been handed over to their families after legal formalities, adding that an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway."
