Child dies in Ukhiya landslide, two shelters damaged

A child has died in a landslide at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, following continuous heavy rainfall. On the same day, two shelters were damaged in separate landslide incidents, though no casualties were reported in those events.

The landslide occurred around 2:30pm on Wednesday (August 5) in Block F/5 of Rohingya Camp-13 in Ukhiya, collapsing onto a family's shelter. Nunu Zia, son of Jamir Hossain, was buried under the mud. Locals rescued him and took him to the camp hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Earlier that day, around 2:10pm, separate landslides occurred in Blocks M-8 and M-32 of Rohingya Camp-20 due to excessive rainfall. Two shelters were rendered uninhabitable. No casualties were reported in these incidents.

The residents of the damaged shelters are Md Saber (Block M-8) and Halima (Block M-32). Following the accidents, they were relocated to nearby shelters and relatives' houses for safety.

Camp-13 leader Syed Karim said a Rohingya child died due to a landslide caused by continuous rainfall. The burial process was underway with the camp administration's permission.

Concerns have grown over increased landslide risks in various Rohingya camps in Ukhiya due to continuous rain. Officials said families living in high-risk areas are being alerted, and efforts to relocate them to safer locations are ongoing.
