Chinese embassy clarifies 'Eid gift with Jamaat' confusion
The Chinese embassy in Bangladesh distributed food packets among Dhaka residents as Eid-ul-Fitr gifts. The food distribution event was organised on Tuesday, March 17, at the grounds of Mirpur 10 Adarsha School in Dhaka-15 constituency. Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman were present at the event.
However, the presence of Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman at the Chinese aid distribution event raised questions on social media. Subsequently, the Chinese embassy issued a clarification on the matter.
According to the embassy, some information circulating on social media regarding a charitable event involving the Chinese ambassador is not consistent with the truth.
The embassy further stated that they remain committed to China's friendly policy towards Bangladesh. Reaffirming support for the good governance of the elected government, the embassy said they will continue to work in unison with the Bangladesh government for the welfare of the people of both countries.
Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami's verified Facebook page mentioned the gift distribution as a joint initiative of China and Jamaat, which also created confusion. After the Chinese embassy's clarification, the post was corrected by Jamaat.
It is noteworthy that earlier on January 26, 2025, food supplies and blankets were distributed at the Wami Trust ground in Safipur, Kaliakair upazila, Gazipur, as an initiative of China and Jamaat-e-Islami. The Chinese ambassador and Jamaat Ameer were present at that event as well.
