Chinese Embassy issues strict warning regarding marriage of Chinese citizens in Bangladesh
The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka has urged Chinese citizens residing in or visiting Bangladesh not to seek any illegal matchmaking services or assistance from brokers for marriage. The embassy stated that such activities could be considered linked to human trafficking, and those involved could face strict legal actions, including arrest.
In a warning message published on social media, the embassy stated that if any individual travels to Bangladesh with the intention of finding a wife through brokers or agencies, they could face legal complications under human trafficking laws on July 14.
According to the embassy, fraudulent incidents under the guise of international marriages have recently increased. Therefore, Chinese citizens residing abroad have been advised to stay away from such risky activities.
It further stated that international marriages must be based on mutual consent, respect, and sincere relationships. Illegal practices such as 'buying brides' or marrying in exchange for money often lead to financial fraud, exploitation, and risks to personal safety.
The Chinese Embassy also mentioned that the Chinese government is taking various preventive measures to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad and to prevent fraud in the name of marriage.
Meanwhile, a report by the South China Morning Post stated that under Bangladesh's anti-human trafficking laws, anyone convicted of such crimes faces a minimum of seven years of imprisonment and a fine of at least 500,000 BDT. Depending on the nature and severity of the crime, the punishment can extend up to life imprisonment or the death penalty. In addition, inciting human trafficking or being involved in less serious related offenses carries a punishment of three to seven years of imprisonment and a maximum fine of 20,000 BDT.
Earlier, Chinese embassies in Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Pakistan, and Nepal had issued similar warning messages. According to data from the Supreme People's Procuratorate of China, 1,544 individuals were arrested between January 2024 and March 2025 on charges of being involved in human trafficking and fraudulent matchmaking rings.
Data shows that many Chinese citizens, hoping to get a foreign wife, have been defrauded of large sums of money. Conversely, in some instances, allegations of abducting women and forcing them into marriages with Chinese men have also surfaced.
