Chinmoy Krishna Das among 38 named in a chargesheet filed in Chattogram
Police have submitted a chargesheet against 38 individuals, including Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagron Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das, in connection with the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram.
The chargesheet was filed on Tuesday (July 1) by Chattogram Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali Region) Mahfuzur Rahman, the investigating officer in the case. The charges include murder, assault on lawyers, obstruction of police work, and the use of explosives.
Lawyer Saiful Islam was stabbed and beaten to death on November 26, 2024, during a clash over Chinmoy Das' bail. His father, Jamal Uddin, filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station naming 31 individuals. Subsequently, five more cases were filed, and 51 people were arrested. Of them, 21 have been directly charged with involvement in the killing.
Court sources confirmed that accused Chandan Das, Ripon Das, and Rajib Bhattacharya gave confessional statements, detailing the attack in which Saiful was beaten with sticks, bricks, and sharp weapons. Investigators stated that the murder was carried out at the direction of Chinmoy Das.
Earlier, on May 5, a court ordered Chinmoy Krisna Das’ arrest in connection with the case. He was arrested on November 25 from Mohammadpur, Dhaka, in a separate sedition case filed on October 31 by BNP leader Firoz Khan, who was later dismissed from his position.
