Chinmoy Krishna Das granted five-hour parole to attend mother’s funeral

Sammilita Sanatan Jagran Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari has been granted five hours of parole to attend his mother’s funeral.

Syed Mahbubul Haque, additional district magistrate of Chattogram, confirmed the decision at 2:45pm Thursday (September 10).

District Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam said the parole application had been approved in accordance with the law.

Chinmoy’s mother, Sondha Rani Dhar, 71, died at Mekhal Pundarik Dham in Hathazari on Thursday morning. Following her death, his brother Ranjan Kumar Dhar applied to the district magistrate seeking permission for Chinmoy to attend her last rites.

Senior superintendent of Chattogram Central Jail Iqbal Hossain said the authorities had been informed of the decision and would release Chinmoy as soon as they received the official order. He will be returned to custody after the five-hour parole period.

Chinmoy was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, in a sedition case filed over alleged disrespect to the national flag. The case was filed against him and 18 others at Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram on October 31 that year.

His arrest and subsequent bail hearing triggered violent clashes in Chattogram on November 26, 2024, during which lawyer Saiful Islam was beaten and hacked to death. A murder case was later filed by Saiful’s father against 31 named suspects.
