Chinmoy Krishna returns to jail after mother's funeral

Spokesperson of the Sanatan Jagaran Jote, Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, has returned to Chattogram Central Jail after completing his parole period, following the funeral and cremation of his mother.

He entered the jail safely at around 8:03pm on Thursday, September 10.

Earlier on Thursday morning, his mother, Sandhya Rani, died while undergoing treatment at Pundarik Dham in Mekhal union of Hathazari upazila, Chattogram. She was 71 years old and had been undergoing treatment for a long time for cancer and various other complications. Chinmoy's family had applied to the Chattogram Deputy Commissioner for his release on parole to attend his mother's funeral rites.

Following the application, Chattogram Additional District Magistrate Syed Mahbubul Haque granted Chinmoy Das parole for five hours, from 4pm to 9pm.

On Thursday afternoon, the funeral and cremation of his mother were completed at Sri Sri Pundarik Dham in Mekhal union of Hathazari upazila. After the cremation, he left for Chattogram Central Jail at around 7pm and reached the jail at 8:03pm. The entire process was completed peacefully under strict security by law enforcement agencies.

Confirming the matter, Senior Jail Superintendent of Chattogram Central Jail Md Iqbal Hossain told Dhaka Post that he was brought back to Chattogram Jail between 8pm and 8:15pm.

He is currently imprisoned as an under-trial prisoner in a case filed with Kotwali Police Station. Chinmoy Das's family name is Chandan Kumar Dhar. After taking religious initiation, he adopted the name Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari. He is the youngest among three brothers and one sister.

It may be mentioned that after the political changeover on August 5, 2024, Chinmoy Das came into the spotlight as the spokesperson of the Sanatan community's movement with eight-point demands, protesting attacks on minorities. In October of that year, a sedition case was filed against him at Kotwali Police Station on charges of insulting the national flag. He was subsequently arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on November 25.

The next day, when a court denied him bail and ordered him sent to jail, his supporters staged a protest surrounding the prison van on the Chattogram court premises. During the clash at that time, a lawyer, Saiful Islam Alif, was killed near the court premises. Chinmoy Das currently faces a total of eight cases, including the murder case of lawyer Alif. Although he secured bail in several cases from the High Court, he remains in jail due to detention in other cases.
