Christmas Day today
Today marks Christmas Day, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, the revered Jewish preacher and religious leader of the first century. Christians in Bangladesh and across the world are celebrating the occasion with devotion, joy, and festivity.
Special prayers are being held at churches, which are beautifully illuminated for the occasion. Makeshift Christmas trees have been installed at homes, places of worship, and missions across the country, adding to the festive spirit. Children eagerly await visits from Santa Claus, often portrayed by elders in the community, who bring joy by distributing gifts and sweets.
Christmas is a public holiday in Bangladesh. In honor of the day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus extended their greetings to the Christian community, wishing peace, prosperity, and harmony for all citizens, according to the local media.
President Shahabuddin lauded Bangladesh's tradition of communal harmony, emphasizing that people of all religions practice their faiths freely in the country. Reflecting on Jesus Christ's teachings, he highlighted the enduring relevance of love, compassion, forgiveness, and justice in creating a peaceful and united world.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed hope that the celebrations would strengthen harmony among communities. He admired Jesus Christ’s dedication to justice and peace, describing his sacrifice for the poor and oppressed as an eternal source of inspiration for humanity.
Churches in Dhaka and other parts of the country are hosting various programs, including the lighting of candles and the singing of carols, to celebrate the holy day. Christmas trees and decorations adorn the homes of Christian families, while community gatherings foster a shared spirit of joy and togetherness.
The festivities also include traditional events for children, such as gift exchanges and performances praising Jesus Christ. Santa Claus, a beloved symbol of Christmas, plays a central role in making the celebrations memorable for the younger generation.
National newspapers are publishing special features on the significance of Christmas, while Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and private TV and radio channels are airing programs to mark the occasion. The celebrations reflect the universal message of love, compassion, and unity that lies at the heart of Jesus Christ’s teachings.
