Citizens' delegation calls for reconstruction of Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman sculpture

A citizens' delegation from Dhaka has called for the reconstruction of the vandalized sculpture of Bir Sreshtho Sepoy Hamidur Rahman at the central bus terminal area in Jhenaidah.

The delegation visited the site on Thursday, paid tribute by laying flowers, and urged the authorities to rebuild the sculpture at its original location with an improved design.

The delegation included human rights activist Nur Khan Liton, journalist Abu Sayeed Khan, University of Dhaka professor Robayet Ferdous, Nagorik Uddyog Chief Executive Zakir Hossain, Islamic University teacher Farha Tanzim Titil, and Bangladesh Adivasi Forum leader Dipayan Khisa.

Nur Khan Liton said the vandalism of the sculpture was an attack on the spirit of Bangladesh's Liberation War. He called for those responsible to be identified and brought to justice, and demanded that the sculpture be rebuilt without delay.

Professor Robayet Ferdous said there could be no compromise on the history and ideals of the Liberation War. He alleged that those who deny the Liberation War were behind such incidents.

Journalist Abu Sayeed Khan described the demolition of the sculpture in broad daylight as deeply unfortunate. He called for the identities of those involved to be disclosed and legal action to be taken against them.

Later, the delegation met the Deputy Commissioner of Jhenaidah and exchanged views with journalists at the Jhenaidah Press Club.

The sculpture of Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman, located at Jhenaidah's central bus terminal, began to be demolished on July 13.

Following widespread criticism, the district administration suspended the demolition work on July 17.
