Citizens must share responsibility for keeping Dhaka clean: DNCC Administrator

Keeping Dhaka clean and modern requires active participation from residents alongside city authorities, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan said on Saturday (August 15).

“City authorities alone cannot keep the capital clean. Citizens must also take responsibility for maintaining their surroundings,” he said while inaugurating a cleanliness drive in the Mirpur-2 area as part of the city corporation’s Cleanliness Week programme.

Khan said DNCC is stepping up cleanliness activities across the capital and plans to hold regular drives every Saturday at schools, colleges and other locations. Students and local residents will be encouraged to take part in the campaigns, he said.

He urged residents to keep not only roads and public spaces clean but also their homes, courtyards and surrounding areas. Developing a culture of cleanliness at the household level would gradually improve the city’s overall environment, he added.

The DNCC administrator also said the corporation is expanding the use of technology in waste management. The ‘Fix It DNCC’ system, he said, has helped make waste removal and related services more effective.

Khan said DNCC is working to build a modern, clean and odour-free capital, but the effort will succeed only if residents avoid littering, follow civic rules and keep their surroundings clean.

“A liveable city can be built only through a collective effort,” he said.
