Claim of Bangladesh being 47th among powerful countries is false: Rumor Scanner

A claim spreading on social media alleges that the interim government has raised Bangladesh to the 47th position among powerful countries in just eight months or that the country has fallen seven places to 47th in the same period. However, Rumor Scanner has confirmed that this claim is completely false and unfounded.

The fact-checking organization found that false claims are circulating on social media, asserting that Bangladesh ranks as the 47th most powerful country according to the US News ranking. One version claims that the interim government elevated Bangladesh to this position in just eight months, while another suggests that the country dropped from 40th to 47th place.

However, after verifying the facts, Rumor Scanner proved both claims to be false.

Their investigation found that, according to the US News ranking published on September 10, 2024, Bangladesh holds the 71st position overall. However, in the Power Ranking, Bangladesh is indeed ranked 47th, which was used as the basis for the false claim.

It is important to note that this ranking is based on a survey conducted between March 22 and May 23, 2024, meaning that it was not determined under the interim government or within the past eight months. Moreover, US News publishes this ranking every September, and the 2025 ranking has not been released yet.

Additionally, the claim initially spread on social media through a Facebook page named ‘Asian SEA Story’ on February 10, falsely presenting it as the 2025 ranking. Later, on April 6, an X account named ‘Global Statistics’ reposted the same misleading claim.

Rumor Scanner further confirmed that Bangladesh was never ranked 123rd, and no such ranking has ever been published by US News.
