Clash at Satkhira Press Club leaves several journalists injured
Several journalists were injured on Monday following a violent clash between two rival factions over control of the Satkhira Press Club.
The incident occurred around 11:00 AM, reportedly triggered by ongoing disputes regarding the club’s leadership. Among the injured are Abul Kashem, Rafiqul Islam Shawon, Al Imran, Belal Hossain, Aminur Rahman, Sohrab Hossain, and Amit Kumar Ghosh. The identities of other injured individuals have not yet been confirmed.
Conflicting accounts have emerged from both sides involved in the confrontation.
Abul Kashem, claiming to be president of one faction, stated that he arrived at the press club around 10:30 AM to attend a previously scheduled meeting. He alleged that 70 to 80 hired attackers, led by Abu Sayeed and Abdul Bari, launched a premeditated assault. According to Kashem, both individuals have long been occupying the press club illegally and were also involved in a similar attack during the previous Awami League administration.
In contrast, Abu Naser Md. Abu Sayeed, representing the opposing faction, asserted that their committee is the legally recognized one. He claimed the clash began when rival members attempted to seize control of the press club. Sayeed alleged that their members were defending the premises when they came under attack, resulting in injuries.
Officer-in-Charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, Shamimul Haque, confirmed that police have been deployed and the situation is currently under control.
