A clash broke out between activists of Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir at Dhaka Polytechnic Institute in the capital.

The incident occurred around 1:00am on Monday night, March 2. Several members from both sides were injured.

Witnesses said the two groups first engaged in a verbal altercation over establishing dominance on campus, which later escalated into a clash. Chasing and counter-chasing, as well as scuffles, were reported during the incident.

Some of the injured were taken to hospital. Tension spread across the campus immediately after the ঘটনা, prompting the deployment of police to bring the situation under control.

Chhatra Dal central president Rakibul Islam Rakib alleged in a Facebook status that Shibir activists entered dormitory rooms with locally made weapons and attacked Chhatra Dal members and general students.

He claimed one Chhatra Dal activist was seriously injured in a machete attack and several others were hurt. He demanded the arrest and punishment of those responsible.

However, Chhatra Shibir central committee international affairs secretary and DUCSU vice-president Sadiq Kayem claimed that Chhatra Dal activists had entered the dormitory under cover of darkness and attacked Shibir members with machetes, rods and locally made weapons.

No immediate official statement was available from the administration regarding the incident. Law enforcement agencies remain on alert to keep the situation normal.
