Clash erupts between students and locals at CU, 15 including proctor injured
Chittagong University (CU) witnessed renewed tensions on Sunday, August 31 as violent clashes erupted between students and local residents around midday. University students were reportedly attacked simultaneously from three different directions. At least 15 people, including the university proctor, sustained injuries in the confrontations.
The incident traces back to the previous night (Saturday, August 30) at approximately 11:15 PM. A female student was allegedly assaulted by a gatekeeper while attempting to enter her flat. Upon the arrival of nearby students, the gatekeeper fled the scene, prompting local residents to hurl bricks and stones at the students. This escalated into a full-scale clash between the two groups.
Locals reportedly used the mosque’s loudspeaker to announce and mobilize attacks on the students. The violence primarily occurred near Gate No. 2 of the university campus. Reports indicate that many students suffered serious stab wounds during the altercation.
Following the unrest, the campus has remained tense since early morning. In response, the university administration has announced the suspension of all scheduled exams for today to ensure safety and order.
