Clash over dominance in Sunamganj leaves over 50 injured
A long-standing dispute led to a violent clash between two groups in Shrinathpur village of Patharia Union under Shantiganj Upazila, Sunamganj. The incident took place on Tuesday night, leaving over fifty people injured from both sides.
According to local sources, a long-standing dispute over land and dominance exists between the groups of Elkas Mia and Idris Mia; and the group of Mohammad Mursalin Mia, Monsur Uddin, and Yas Uddin from the same village. A clash had erupted between the two sides on Monday, which was expected to be resolved through mediation, but the issue remained unsettled.
On Tuesday afternoon, women from the Elkas Mia group insulted the opposing side, sparking a heated argument. The tension escalated, leading to a violent clash between both groups, with local weapons being used.
As a result, over fifty people were injured and later taken to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for treatment. The identities of the injured have not yet been disclosed. The situation was eventually brought under control with the intervention of local residents, followed by the arrival of the police.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shantiganj Police Station, Mohammad Akram Ali, said, "The police are stationed at the scene, and necessary legal action will be taken regarding the incident."
