At least 35 people were injured in a violent clash between two rival groups over Eid congregation and distribution of sacrificial meat in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur on Thursday morning (May 28).

The incident took place around 9:30am at the Purbopara Jame Mosque in Algi union shortly after Eid prayers, according to police and local sources. Several houses were also allegedly vandalised and looted during the violence.

Locals said the conflict stemmed from a long-standing rivalry between supporters of Kamrul Molla and Abubakkar Munshi over local dominance in the area. Tensions reportedly escalated during the Eid congregation before turning into a full-scale clash over the distribution of sacrificial meat.

Witnesses said members of both groups engaged in fierce fighting using locally made weapons, leaving dozens injured. Police rushed to the scene and later brought the situation under control.

The injured were taken to Bhanga upazila Health Complex and Faridpur Medical College Hospital for treatment, while several others received primary medical care locally.

Among the injured are Zakir Hossain, Amir Hossain, Jamal Molla, Mannan Molla, Rubel Mia, Ilias Sheikh, Sujon Mia, Asad Molla, Samrat Molla, Hena Begum, Zahid Sheikh, Jalal Molla, Tuhin Mia, Bahar Mia, Kuwait Sheikh, Raju Sheikh, Rubel Sheikh, Hafizul, Alamin, Munna Matubbar, Sirajul Matubbar, Baizid Matubbar, Rezaul, Faruk Matubbar, Pannu Matubbar, Sohag Matubbar, Sentu Matubbar and Cheharun Begum, among others.

Attempts to contact Kamrul Molla and Abubakkar Munshi for comments were unsuccessful as their mobile phones were found switched off.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Bhanga Police Station Md. Mizanur Rahman said the situation is now under control.

“No formal complaint has been filed yet. Legal action will be taken after investigation if any complaint is received,” the OC said.
