Clash over local dominance in Jhenaidah leaves farmer dead, 10 injured

A farmer was killed and at least 10 others, including women, were injured in a violent clash between two rival groups over local dominance in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah.

The deceased, Mohon Sheikh, 60, succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

The incident took place in the Khalpar area of Madhabpur village under Monohorpur union on Thursday morning (April 23).

Locals said tensions had been simmering between supporters of Abu Zahid Chowdhury and Tarikul Sadat over social dominance. The situation escalated after a supporter of Zahid was allegedly assaulted by Sadat’s followers on Wednesday evening.

In retaliation, both groups engaged in a clash on Thursday morning using locally made weapons, leaving at least 11 people injured.

Emergency department physician Dr. Nahid Emran confirmed the fatality and said the injured are receiving treatment. One critically injured person, Abbas Sheikh, has been referred to Faridpur for advanced care.

Shailkupa Police Station Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir Molla said the clash stemmed from a dispute over dominance. Additional police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
