A violent clash broke out in Rajshahi city over control of the district motor workers’ union office, triggering crude bomb explosions, chase-and-counter-chase, and widespread vandalism.

The incident took place between 4:30pm and 5:30pm in the Shiroil Bus Terminal area on Thursday (April 23), leaving the union office, nearby shops, building glass panels and several motorcycles damaged, according to police.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police spokesperson Additional Deputy Commissioner Gaziur Rahman confirmed the incident, saying two rival groups were involved in the confrontation.

Police and local sources said tensions escalated following internal disputes within the union leadership in the aftermath of the political changeover after the fall of the previous government.

Earlier grievances over alleged harassment of workers led to protests and the sealing of the union office, with demands for fresh elections.

Witnesses said rival groups gathered in separate locations in the afternoon before one faction entered the Shiroil area in a procession. Soon after, five to six crude bombs exploded, spreading panic in the area.

Following the blasts, the opposing group retreated, allowing the advancing faction to take control of the union office. Vandalism continued for nearly an hour, with damage reported to nearby establishments before the group withdrew.

Locals alleged that police remained present but were largely ineffective in controlling the situation during the peak of violence. Additional police personnel were later deployed to restore order.

Union leader Rafiqul Islam claimed his group “regained control” of the office, stating that there were no further issues after their intervention.

Police said the situation is now under control and surveillance footage is being reviewed to identify those involved. Legal action will be taken against the perpetrators, authorities added.
