Clash with torchlights in Brahmanbaria, 50 injured including ASP-chairman

At least 50 people including an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) and a union parishad chairman have been injured in a clash between residents of two villages in Sarail of Brahmanbaria over a dispute regarding football match of children and adolescents. The clash that continued from evening to night left two of the injured in critical condition who have been sent to Dhaka.

Talking to police and several local people it was learnt that the clash started around 6pm on Tuesday between residents of Swalponoyagaon and Notun Habelipara villages of Sadar Union of the upazila. The situation came under control around 10:15pm.

Earlier a football match was going on at the field of Swalponoyagaon Government Primary School from around 4:30pm. Around 5pm a spectator adolescent of Notun Habelipara village beat another adolescent of Swalponoyagaon village. Centering this incident people of the two villages got involved in a clash on the rural road in the evening with sticks, bricks, dao and spears. Later at night also the two sides continued the clash lighting torchlights.

Among the injured, university student Mehrab Alam and businessman Rukku Hosen have been sent to Dhaka in critical condition. Besides, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Brahmanbaria’s Sarail Circle Jahangir Alam and Chairman of Sarail Sadar Union Parishad Abdur Jabbar were injured by brick hits.

Abdur Jabbar said he was injured on the leg and waist while trying to stop the clash. Later he applied ice on the injury sites. He also informed that the situation is currently calm.

Medical Officer of Sarail Upazila Health Complex Sabbir Ahmed informed that at least 35 people injured in the clash received treatment at the hospital by around 9:30pm. Later more injured persons came to the hospital.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sarail police station Md Manjur Kader Bhuiya confirming the authenticity of the incident said attack was also carried out on police during the clash. The assistant superintendent of police of Sarail Circle was injured by brick hit on the leg. He informed that the persons involved in the incident will be brought under the law.
