Clashes between Dhaka College and Ideal College students, police fire teargas
Fresh clashes broke out between students of Dhaka College and Dhanmondi Ideal College in the Science Laboratory area of the capital, spreading panic across the neighbourhood.
The incident occurred around 11:30 am on Thursday, November 22, when higher secondary level students from both institutions engaged in chases, counter-chases and physical altercations, disrupting normal life in the area.
The exact cause of the clash could not be immediately determined.
To bring the situation under control, police fired two rounds of teargas inside the Dhaka College campus, forcing students to disperse.
On-the-spot observations showed heightened tension along the New Market section of Mirpur Road. During the clashes, students were seen hurling bricks and stones at police. As a result, vehicular movement on the Mirpur to New Market route was completely suspended, while traffic from New Market towards Mirpur was also brought to a standstill.
Earlier, on November 9 last year, students from both colleges had signed a peace agreement mediated by New Market Police Station, pledging not to engage in further violence. At that time, they symbolically carried roses and chanted slogans of friendship.
However, the truce proved short-lived. Less than a month later, on December 10, higher secondary students from the two institutions again clashed, during which two buses belonging to Dhaka College were vandalised.
