Teachers in all government colleges across Bangladesh are boycotting classes in solidarity with the assault on faculty at Dhaka College. As a result, examinations under the National University have been postponed at all public and private colleges.

At the same time, BCS (General Education) cadre officers in government educational institutions are staging sit-ins wearing black badges. The programme will continue throughout Tuesday, October 14.

The BCS General Education Association announced the strike via a notice signed by Convenor Prof Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel and Secretary Dr Md Masud Rana Khan on Monday night, October 13.

The notice condemned the attack on teachers and students at the venerable Dhaka College campus, including damage in the teachers’ lounge. It demanded swift arrests and exemplary punishment for those involved.

Teachers nationwide will carry out an all-out strike. All General Education BCS cadre officers have been urged to participate and support the movement.

The organisation’s leaders said such violence against teachers and students is entirely unacceptable, creating fear and uncertainty in academic spaces; a threat to the state’s education system.

The earlier conflict arose Monday morning, October 13, when students from seven colleges marching to demand expedited implementation of the Dhaka Central University Act 2025 clashed with faculty at Dhaka College. A student who allegedly taunted teachers as “broker” was held in the common room; fellow students later surrounded the administrative building and forced his release. The confrontation escalated into conflict between teachers and students.
