CMP Commissioner visits Nayeem Hasan’s home, apologises over harassment
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali has visited the residence of Bangladesh national team spinner Nayeem Hasan and expressed regret over the alleged detention and harassment of the cricketer, assuring that those found responsible will face action.
The visit took place on Saturday morning (June 13) at Nayeem’s family home in the Faridar Para area under Chandgaon Police Station. CMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Wahidul Haque Chowdhury accompanied the police chief during the visit.
Speaking to reporters afterward, the CMP commissioner said the police force is a professional institution and would not shield anyone found guilty of misconduct.
“If any member behaves unprofessionally, the responsibility will be personal. The police department will not protect such actions. No one will be spared if wrongdoing is proven through the investigation,” he said.
The development comes amid growing public attention over allegations made by Nayeem Hasan, who claimed he was stopped, detained and physically assaulted by police personnel while returning home from Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport early Friday night.
According to the cricketer, he was travelling in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw when a police team intercepted the vehicle in the Lalkhan Bazar area. What initially appeared to be a routine search later escalated, with officers allegedly attempting to force him into a vehicle after identifying him as a suspect.
Nayeem alleged that he was assaulted despite carrying identification documents and cricket-related equipment that confirmed his identity as a national team player. He further claimed that he was later taken to Khulshi Police Station, where the situation changed only after interventions from various quarters.
Following the incident, he received primary medical treatment and his family initiated legal action.
A case has since been filed against Khulshi Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, Constable Rasel Chowdhury and a police source identified as Sohel. Police have already arrested Sohel in connection with the case.
