Coast Guard station attacked in Sundarbans, several injured

A group of miscreants attacked the Bangladesh Coast Guard station located in the Joymonirghol area of the Sundarbans. Several Coast Guard personnel on duty were injured during the attack. The Coast Guard has launched a joint operation to uncover the actual cause of the incident and to identify and bring those involved to justice.

This information was provided in a press release by Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan on Thursday afternoon, June 11.

The press release stated that the Coast Guard has long been performing its duties professionally to ensure overall security in the Sundarbans, suppress forest bandits, conserve biodiversity, and maintain law and order in coastal areas. Regular patrols, intelligence surveillance, and operations are conducted in various parts of the Sundarbans to prevent theft, robbery, and sabotage.

Joymonirghol area under Mongla Police Station has long been known as a key hideout for forest bandits and their collaborators. This is precisely why a Coast Guard station was established there. Since the station's establishment, the supply of provisions, weapons, and logistical support to forest bandits has been largely cut off, making it difficult for them to carry out their criminal activities. As a result, the bandits and their collaborators cannot accept the Coast Guard's presence in the area.

The Coast Guard claimed that miscreants launched a surprise attack and vandalised the Joymonirghol station on Thursday. Immediate measures were taken to bring the situation under control. At the same time, operations to identify and arrest those involved in the incident are ongoing.

Lt Cdr Sabbir Alam Sujan said that based on initial information and analysis of the local situation, it appears that some vested quarters and dishonest circles are carrying out planned attacks, vandalism, propaganda, and creating confusion with the intention of having the Coast Guard removed from the area to facilitate their own illicit activities. The Coast Guard official urged everyone to remain vigilant in this regard.
