Cold weather grips Kurigram as temperature drops to 16 degrees Celsius
Normal life in the northern district of Kurigram is being disrupted as dense fog and dropping temperatures signal the onset of winter. Farmers, laborers, and daily wage earners are particularly affected, as they are forced to work outdoors in the harsh conditions of fog and chilly weather.
The minimum temperature in the district was recorded at 16 degrees Celsius at 7:00 am on Saturday.
From midnight to morning, vast areas remain blanketed in dense fog, disrupting transportation as vehicular movement on various routes is getting disrupted.
Although the temperature slightly increases during the day, the chill becomes more intense from midnight onwards.
The cold weather has led to a rise in winter-related illnesses including colds, fevers, respiratory problems like pneumonia and diarrhea with hospitals seeing more patients daily.
Abu Saeed from Pancgachi Union in Kurigram Sadar said, "The cold has been increasing for the past 5-6 days, and at night, the fog comes down like rain. It's hard to work because of the cold and chill, but I still went out to work this morning. If I don't work, how will my family survive?"
Subal Chandra Sarkar, the acting officer of the Kurigram Meteorological Office said, "Although the current cold isn’t severe and chilly winds may begin next week, lowering the district's temperature in the coming days."
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the lowest temperature of 14.3 degrees Celsius was recorded in Panchagarh’s Tetulia on Friday while maximum temperature of 31.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Kutubdia and Cox’s Bazar respectively.
