A college student was found hanging inside a rented house in Jamalpur city on Friday night (August 28), around two to three days after the room was reportedly locked from inside.

The deceased was identified as Rima Akter, 21, daughter of Shahidullah of Balijuri in Madarganj upazila. She was an honours student in the English Department at Government Ashek Mahmud College.

According to police, the door to Rima’s room had remained closed for two to three days. On Friday evening, neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from the room and alerted the authorities through the national emergency service 999.

Police and firefighters later arrived at the house in Kacharipara and broke open the locked door. Rima’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan and was subsequently recovered and taken to the police station.

Jamalpur Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Nazmul Jannat Shah said the condition of the body suggested that Rima may have died two to three days earlier.

Police also found discrepancies in her address. The house register listed Balijuri in Madarganj as her permanent address, while her national identity card mentioned Islampur upazila.

“The actual cause of death will be determined after the autopsy,” Shah said, adding that legal proceedings were underway.

Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
