College student's death shrouded in mystery
The death of a college student in Mirsarai, Chattogram, has been shrouded in mystery following a motorcycle accident on Sunday, June 7 . While initial reports indicated that 21-year-old Sriti Pal died in the crash, her family has alleged she was raped and murdered, and that the accident was staged.
The victim's father, Titu Pal, a homeopathic doctor, filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at the Mirsarai Police Station . Two men, Md Tanvir, 27, and his associate Ashraf Uddin, 25, who were with the victim and brought her body to the hospital, have been arrested and sent to jail . Several others were named as accused in the case.
According to the case statement, the victim left for private tuition around midday but was brought to the hospital dead after a reported crash . The family's suspicion arose after viewing the body at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
"The body had no injury marks consistent with a road accident, but there were severe injuries to her private parts and abdomen," the victim's father said.
The motorcycle involved in the alleged accident also had no scratches, and the two suspects had no injury marks, the family alleged. They claimed that Tanvir and his friends raped and murdered Sriti and then staged the accident to cover up the crime.
Police, however, maintain they are investigating from both angles. A CCTV footage reviewed by police appears to show a motorcycle veering off the road and crashing into a median barrier . Mirsarai Police Station OC Farida Yasmin said an investigation has been launched and all CCTV footage along the route is being reviewed.
