Commerce Adviser assures no export disruption despite US 20% tariff
Bangladesh’s exports to the United States are unlikely to face disruption despite the recent imposition of a 20 percent tariff, Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin has said.
The statement came after the conclusion of the third round of tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and the US. Following the talks, the White House issued a statement confirming the 20 percent tariff on Bangladeshi products, a significant reduction from the initial 37 percent tariff, which was later lowered to 35 percent.
Speaking on Friday, Sheikh Bashiruddin, who led the Bangladeshi delegation, expressed confidence in the country’s competitive position. “With a 20 percent tariff imposed on Bangladesh, we will remain competitive. There is no likelihood of disruption to our exports to the US,” he said. However, he noted that Bangladesh had hoped for a tariff rate below 20 percent.
Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared the adviser’s reaction on his verified Facebook account.
The United States has also imposed tariffs on other countries, including 25 percent on India, 20 percent on Sri Lanka and Vietnam, and 19 percent on Cambodia and Pakistan.
