The interim government has formed an investigative committee to examine allegations of widespread irregularities, corruption, and administrative misconduct in the 2014, 2018, and 2024 national elections.

A notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Thursday (June 26) confirmed the formation of the committee, with former High Court Justice Shamim Hasnain appointed as chairman of the main investigation committee.

The other members include, Shamim Al Mamun, former Additional Secretary; Kazi Mahfuzul Haque, associate professor of law, University of Dhaka; Barrister Tazrian Akram Hossain, advocate at District and Sessions Judge Court; Dr Md Abdul Alim, election expert.

According to the official statement, the last three parliamentary elections—held in 2014, 2018, and 2024—have drawn sharp criticism both domestically and internationally. Allegations range from vote rigging and disenfranchisement to manipulation of state institutions in favour of the then-ruling Awami League.

The government noted that these alleged electoral malpractices violated the constitutional mandate of governing through freely elected representatives and have undermined the rule of law, democracy, and citizens' fundamental rights.

"In order to guarantee the people’s right to vote, safeguard democracy, and prevent the reemergence of authoritarian rule," the notification stated, "The interim government has decided to investigate the corruption, irregularities, and criminal activities associated with these elections."

The committees will also be responsible for preparing a set of actionable recommendations to ensure transparency, fairness, and public trust in future electoral processes.
