The Commonwealth will send a pre-election assessment mission to Dhaka from November 19-23. Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal said that he got the request via email earlier this week. He said his office will inform the matter to the foreign and home ministries. According to an EC official, the Commonwealth will decide on sending a full observer mission only after the findings of the pre-election mission are communicated to the Commonwealth secretary-general. Earlier, the EU sent a pre-election mission and decided not to send a full observer mission. The EU, however, later said that they would send a four-member observer team to monitor the polls. A US pre-election mission has visited Bangladesh but is yet to declare whether they will send a full mission or not.

বাংলাদেশের দ্বাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনকে সামনে রেখে প্রাক-নির্বাচন পর্যবেক্ষক পাঠাবে কমনওয়েলথ। চলতি মাসের তৃতীয় সপ্তাহে তাদের আসার কথা রয়েছে। শুক্রবার (৩ নভেম্বর) ইসি সূত্রগুলো বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেছে। ইসি সূত্র বলছে, আগামী ১৯ থেকে ২৩ নভেম্বর কমনওয়েলথের প্রতিনিধিদল বাংলাদেশে অবস্থান করতে পারে। তাদের প্রতিবেদনের ভিত্তিতেই নির্বাচনী পর্যবেক্ষক পাঠানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নেবে সংস্থাটি। এ বিষয়ে প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনার (সিইসি) কাজী হাবিবুল আউয়াল বলেন, তারা নভেম্বরের তৃতীয় সপ্তাহে একটি প্রাক-নির্বাচন পর্যবেক্ষণ&nbsp;দল পাঠানোর কথা বলেছে। আশা করি, তারা নির্বাচন পর্যবেক্ষণেও আসবে। এর আগে ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নও (ইইউ) প্রাক-নির্বাচন পরিস্থিতি পর্যবেক্ষণ দল পাঠিয়েছিল। তারা পরে পূর্ণাঙ্গ দল না পাঠিয়ে ছোট &nbsp;দল পাঠানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়। সম্প্রতি বিদেশি পর্যবেক্ষক ও গণমাধ্যমকে নির্বাচন পর্যবেক্ষণের জন্য পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের মাধ্যমে আবেদন আহ্বান করেছে ইসি। এক্ষেত্রে আগামী ২১ নভেম্বরের মধ্যে আবেদন করতে হবে। নভেম্বরের প্রথমার্ধে তফসিল দিয়ে ডিসেম্বরের শেষ অথবা জানুয়ারির প্রথম সপ্তাহের মধ্যে দ্বাদশ সংসদ নির্বাচনের ভোটগ্রহণ করতে চায় ইসি।
