Communalism is fundamentally against religion: Information Minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister M Zahir Uddin Swapon has said that no conspiracy carried out in the name of religion, caste or community will be allowed to undermine Bangladesh by exploiting religious beliefs or practices for political or personal interests.

He made the remarks on Friday (July 31) while addressing the biennial conference of the Barishal district unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad as the chief guest at the Barishal District Shilpakala Academy.

The minister said the government remains committed to protecting the rights of followers of all faiths and reiterated the principle that religion must not be used as a political tool.

Referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s stated position, he said, “Religion belongs to individuals, while the state belongs to all.” He added that any attempt to divide or control the country by using religion for political purposes is unacceptable.

“Communalism is, in fact, contrary to the true spirit of religion,” the minister said, stressing that faith should never be manipulated to create division or hatred.

Swapon also said genuinely religious people would identify and reject those who seek to exploit religion for personal or political gain.

He further noted that political leaders should ensure their words and actions serve the interests of the people.

“As long as the public believes that a political party's activities are aligned with their welfare and aspirations, that party and its election symbol will continue to enjoy public support,” he said.

Leaders of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, representatives of the Barishal district unit, and members of the Hindu community from different levels attended the conference.
