Complete shutdown underway at Rajshahi University
A complete shutdown called by teachers and staff is currently underway at Rajshahi University (RU) on Monday. The movement began on Sunday night (September 21), with administrative officials and employees halting all regular operations.
Essential services including water, electricity, transport, and activities related to the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election remain outside the purview of the shutdown.
Staff members have been staging sit-ins at key points on campus, including in front of the Administration Building, beside the Senate Building, and at Amtala.
A human chain protest is scheduled for later today, following the reported assault on the university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor and several officials. In response to the incident, the university has formed a five-member internal investigation committee.
Additionally, the university syndicate has recommended the formation of a neutral judicial probe committee to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.
Speaking to reporters after Sunday’s emergency syndicate meeting, acting Registrar Professor Dr. Iftikharul Alam Masud confirmed the developments. He stated that the syndicate has upheld the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor’s previous decision regarding the pet quota policy.
Professor Masud further noted that the syndicate has called for full cooperation from all parties to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted conduct of the upcoming RUCSU elections.
