Concerns, fears rise over Durga Puja celebrations: Hindu-Buddhist-Christian unity council
Concerns and anxiety are mounting among devotees regarding the peaceful celebration of the upcoming Durga Puja, according to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council.
The organisation said that while assurances have been given by the Chief Adviser, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Home Adviser that the festival will be celebrated peacefully in a festive atmosphere, the overall situation ahead of the Puja has not inspired confidence. Instead, concerns and fears are steadily growing.
In a statement issued on Friday by Acting General Secretary Monindra Kumar Nath, the central committee highlighted at least nine incidents of attacks and idol vandalism at puja mandaps and temples across the country between September 2 and September 23.
These included: arson at Durga idols in Hamindpur, Sadullapur, Gaibandha on September 2; vandalism of idols at a Kali temple in Ayma Jhaloi, Panchagarh on September 10; vandalism at Rakshakali temple in Swarupdaha Palpara, Mirpur, Kushtia on September 14; two idols broken at Kandulia Kalibari puja mandap in Netrokona Sadar on September 16; destruction of five to six idols at Kashimpur cremation temple in Gazipur on September 17; seven idols vandalised in Taraiapara, Sarishabari, Jamalpur on September 21, with one suspect arrested; vandalism at Madhupar Sri Sri Rakshakali and Durga temple in Sirajdikhan, Munshiganj on the same day over land disputes; six idols vandalised at Haritala universal temple in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah on September 23; and further vandalism at a temple in Tetulia, Tala, Satkhira on the same day. Reports of Puja-related unrest were also received from Chattogram, Kurigram, and Chapainawabganj.
The statement said these incidents have generated widespread fear among devotees. Many anticipate further violence during the Puja. The Council urged the government and administration to take strict measures to maintain overall law and order during the festival.
