Consensus Commission advances toward final decision in political talks
The National Consensus Commission’s discussions with political parties are making steady progress toward final decisions on several key issues, according to Professor Dr Ali Riaz, co-chairman of the commission.
Speaking at the opening of the 22nd day of the second phase of talks on Wednesday afternoon, Dr Riaz said the commission is focused on timely decision-making. “Reaching decisions is a critical part of the responsibility you have given us. We are working to achieve consensus quickly and hope to update you by tomorrow,” he stated.
Today’s agenda includes important topics such as women’s representation in parliament, reforms to the Public Service Commission, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General, judiciary provisions, and the powers and responsibilities of the president, along with the presidential election process and the Electoral College.
Dr Riaz noted that discussions on women’s parliamentary representation have seen notable progress. “A draft proposal on this issue will soon be shared with the participating parties.” However, talks on the president’s powers have yet to commence.
A separate proposal concerning the expansion of citizens’ fundamental rights has been distributed to the participants. “All parties have generally agreed in principle on expanding fundamental rights, but there remain differing opinions regarding the exact constitutional amendments required,” Dr. Riyaz explained.
He also mentioned that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) recommendations and objections have been clearly presented to the commission and have played a significant role in advancing the discussions.
By the end of the day, the commission plans to provide political parties with a list of issues where consensus has been reached. Dr Riaz expressed optimism about presenting a consolidated and acceptable draft charter to all parties by tomorrow.
Calling for continued cooperation to speed up the process, he said, “We hope the spirit of collaboration demonstrated so far will continue.”
Although the proposal regarding the president’s powers and responsibilities is still under preparation, Dr Riaz is hopeful that the commission will reach quick decisions on the other agenda items.
