BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has alleged that a conspiracy is underway to disrupt the democratic system in the country. He made this statement on Monday, December 8, while virtually joining BNP’s programme titled “Plan to build the nation” at the Krishibid Institute, Farmgate, from London.

Tarique Rahman said that due to the absence of accountability in the country, they had waged a movement against the former authoritarian government. There was no accountability regarding whether people were alive or dead, he said. Only democracy can ensure accountability in the country, society and the state, he added. Only an elected government remains accountable to the people, and only an elected government can work for the welfare of the nation.

Mentioning that conspiracies are ongoing on various fronts, he said that attempts are being made to disrupt the democratic process. The masterminds behind the uprising on 5 August 2024 were the ordinary people of this country — a housewife, a rickshaw puller, a CNG driver, a bus helper, students from general institutions and students of madrasas.

He said that the country must now have an accountable government. Positive change will begin gradually if there is accountability. Over the last 16 years, a culture has formed where one person is good and everyone else is bad. After the events of the 5th, he said, it seems that this culture has not changed, but a change is urgently needed.
