Constable cuts child's finger in Natore

A constable has been accused of cutting off part of the finger of an eight-year-old child named Bayezid in Natore following a dispute between two children. The incident took place on Chairman Road in the Baraharishpur union on the outskirts of the town on Thursday morning.

The victim, Bayezid, is the son of bank official Mahmudul Hasan of that area. He is a first-grade student of Natore Police Lines School. Mahmudul Hasan works in Dhaka. His wife and children live in Natore.

Constable Shakil Ahmed, who works at the Superintendent of Police's office, lives with his family in a rented flat at Mahmudul Hasan's house. Mahmudul Hasan said the tenants had organised a picnic on Wednesday night. During play there, a disagreement occurred between Shakil's daughter and Bayezid. He alleged that, centring this, Shakil called Bayezid over on Thursday morning and cut off the upper part of his right index finger with something sharp.

The injured Bayezid has been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Constable Shakil Ahmed could not be found at his rented home when trying to obtain his statement on the allegation.

Natore Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mansur Rahman said police visited the scene after receiving the news. Constable Shakil has made a verbal complaint of physical abuse of his young daughter. However, no party has so far filed a written complaint. Legal action will be taken after investigation if a written complaint is received.
